Directions:
Please note: These are the same basic directions we have on our Candle Science Learning Page for wicking a pillar mold and for making a palm wax pillar candle with some slight adjustments for this particular project.
Step 1 - How To Wick a Pillar Mold
- Place one end of CSN 12 wick through the hole in the bottom of the mold.
- Leave about 4-5 inches of wick hanging over the open end of the mold to center it with the wick bar.
- Seal the hole and wick on the bottom of the mold with a wick stickum. Cover the hole and wick stickum with duct tape and press as securely as possible removing all air bubbles. It helps to make an X with two pieces of duct tape to prevent the wax from leaking through the hole. Place the mold on a rack to keep the taped end level for pouring the wax.
- Pull the wick firmly through the slot in the center of the wick bar and center the wick. Make sure it is long enough to hang over the mold without falling into the wax.
Note: Remember that the BOTTOM of the mold, the closed end where the hole is, will become the TOP of your candle.
Step 2 - How To Make a Palm Wax Pillar Candle
- Weigh out one pound (16 oz.) of wax and melt it in the pouring pitcher using a hot plate or double boiler. Heat wax to 200 degrees F.
- While the wax is melting, thread the wick through the hole in the bottom of the mold and seal the hole with wick stickum and duct tape. (see directions above for wicking a pillar mold).
- Due to variation in room temperatures, it's a good idea to pre-heat the mold to about 100-110 degrees F by placing it in the oven on the warm setting for a few minutes.
- Weigh out 1 oz. of Vanilla Lace Fragrance Oil. Remove wax from heat, add fragrance and stir gently but thoroughly.
- Allow the wax to cool to the pour temperature of 185-195 degrees F. We poured this candle at 195 degrees.
- With mold on cooling rack, carefully pour heated fragranced wax into prepared pillar mold.
- Allow the candle to cool at room temperature overnight.
- Remove the candle from the mold and trim the wick to about 1/4".
- Tie a red satin ribbon around your candle for added color.
Remember to always follow all candle burning safety rules.
