Fine fragrance is one of the most personal ways to experience scent, and creating DIY perfume is easier than you might think. With the right fragrance oil, a high-quality perfume base, and a few simple tools, you can craft a custom fine fragrance that’s uniquely yours.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to make a perfume using CandleScience EcoBase™ Fine Fragrance Base (water-based) and Tideglass Fine Fragrance Oil. You’ll learn how to determine your fill weight, calculate your fragrance load, combine your ingredients, and bottle your finished perfume with confidence. Whether you’re creating a signature scent for yourself or exploring a new product to add to your line, this simple process is a great place to start.

Additional items needed:

  • Gloves
  • Glass or fragrance-safe container
  • Paper towels
  • Funnel
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
Before you begin:

Prepare your space and materials. We like to use isopropyl alcohol to clean the work surface, tools, and bottles. You can also use a protective mat like the Black or Pink Silicone Work Mat to make clean up even easier!

Step 1: Determine your fill line

For this tutorial, we’ll be using the 4 oz. Frosted Round Glass Perfume Bottle and the CandleScience EcoBase™ Fine Fragrance Base.

Place your empty bottle on a scale and press “tare” to set it to zero. Fill the bottle with plain base to your desired height. Take note of the weight and write it down.

The 4 oz. Frosted Round Glass Perfume Bottle should hold 120 g (4.23 oz) of the base in total.

Step 2: Calculate your base and fragrance amounts

Use this equation to determine how much base and fragrance oil you will need to make your perfume:

(weight of base in bottle) x (fragrance %) = total amount of fragrance to use

(weight of base in bottle) - (amount of fragrance) = total amount of base to use

Here, we’ll be using a 15% fragrance load of the Tideglass fine fragrance oil.

120 g base x 15% (0.15) = 18 g of fragrance

120 g base - 18 g of fragrance = 102 g of base

Step 3: Weigh your base

Place a pouring pitcher on a scale and press “tare” to set it to zero. Pour in the base to your desired weight. Remove pitcher and set aside.

Step 4: Weigh your fragrance oil

Place a glass container on a scale and press “tare” to set it to zero. Pour in the fragrance oil to your desired weight and remove from the scale.

Step 5: Combine your base and fragrance

Pour the fragrance oil into the base and stir thoroughly.

Step 6: Pour into bottle and label

Carefully pour the solution into the bottle using a funnel, pouring pitcher or funnel. Place the pump onto the bottle and secure well.

Finish off your perfume with a custom label. For this bottle, we chose a final amount of 3.3 fl oz (100 ml).
