Olfactive Description: Sweet, Balsamic, Woody

A calming, warm, and woody scent, Amyris essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of the amyris balsamifera, a type of evergreen tree or shrub. An excellent base note, Amyris has been used in perfumery for centuries. We highly recommend it in handmade blends to give a complex boost. Amyris essential oil is also used as a more cost efficient and eco-friendly alternative to Sandalwood essential oil.

We’ve found that Amyris essential oil performs best in bath and body products like bar soap, lotion, and perfume. It’s also approved for use in ambience setting wax melts, tarts, and reed diffusers.

Candle Maker’s Notes:
We do not recommend this essential oil for use in candles. While it’s safe for use in candles, we found that a candle’s burning flame transforms the scent into something greasy and unpleasant. The reaction with the flame causes this essential oil scent to shift, but wax melts and flameless creations still produce the expected sweet and woody fragrance.

If you’re seeking a woody scent that’s lovely in candles, we recommend Sandalwood fragrance oil.

Lye Water Temperature 112ºF (44.4°C)
Oil Temperature 110ºF (43.3°C)

We did not experience acceleration or separation. The oils and water were slow to reach an emulsion. We continued stick blending until we reached a medium trace–this was a slow process. The batter poured smoothly into the mold without thickening. After 24 hours, we observed the soap discolored to a very light tan. It was so slight it was almost unnoticeable until we compared it to our unscented reference bar. We saw that only about ¾ of the soap reached the gel phase. The scent was noticeable but a little light. After 30 days, there was no change to the discoloration or scent strength.
