Olfactive Description: Cedar, Balsamic, Woody, Dry

Warm and woody, Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of the Eastern Red Cedar Tree, juniperus virginiana. It’s also one of our favorite essential oils because it’s upcycled from leftover wood shavings from the furniture industry. We love reducing waste! This calming scent is often used as a warm base or middle note in sophisticated blends.

Safe for use in a variety of products, we recommend Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil for use in candles, wax melts, tarts, and reed diffusers. It also makes lovely scented bath and body products like bar soap, liquid soap, lotion, and scrubs.

Candle Maker’s Notes:
If you’re seeking essential oils for candle making, Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil makes our list of recommended essential oils. On our soy performance scale, this essential oil has one leaf out of three. So, while it is safe to use in candles and is true to the out-of-bottle scent, it has a light throw in wax.

Cold Process Soap Performance

Lye Water Temperature 115ºF
Oil temperature 116ºF

We experienced a very slight acceleration but no separation. We stick blended to a medium trace and found that it was starting to thicken. It remained easy to stir and pour into the mold. We gave the mold a few tamps on the counter to smooth out the top. After 24 hours, we observed a very slight tan discoloration. Only about ¾ of the loaf reached the gel phase. We discovered that the top of the loaf had cracked open across the center, but the soap did not appear to have overheated inside. The scent was strong. After 30 days, the tan discoloration was so slight it was only noticeable when compared to an unscented reference bar. The scent had faded quite a bit, but it was still distinguishable.
