Olfactive Description: Cedar, Balsamic, Woody, Dry

Warm and woody, Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil is steam distilled from the wood of the Eastern Red Cedar Tree, juniperus virginiana. It’s also one of our favorite essential oils because it’s upcycled from leftover wood shavings from the furniture industry. We love reducing waste! This calming scent is often used as a warm base or middle note in sophisticated blends.

Safe for use in a variety of products, we recommend Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil for use in candles, wax melts, tarts, and reed diffusers. It also makes lovely scented bath and body products like bar soap, liquid soap, lotion, and scrubs.

Candle Maker’s Notes:
If you’re seeking essential oils for candle making, Cedarwood (Virginian) essential oil makes our list of recommended essential oils. On our soy performance scale, this essential oil has one leaf out of three. So, while it is safe to use in candles and is true to the out-of-bottle scent, it has a light throw in wax.

We experienced a very slight acceleration but no separation. We stick blended to a medium trace and found that it was starting to thicken. It remained easy to stir and pour into the mold. We gave the mold a few tamps on the counter to smooth out the top. After 24 hours, we observed a very slight tan discoloration. Only about ¾ of the loaf reached the gel phase. We discovered that the top of the loaf had cracked open across the center, but the soap did not appear to have overheated inside. The scent was strong. After 30 days, the tan discoloration was so slight it was only noticeable when compared to an unscented reference bar. The scent had faded quite a bit, but it was still distinguishable.

Same EO, Different Product

I'll die on this hill that Cedarwood EO (just like Patchouli EO) is meant to be used as a blender. Recently, I made a Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Cedarwood EO cold processed soap batch at a 3:3:1 ratio. I used Cedarwood to simply round out the minty, cooling freshness of Peppermint and Eucalyptus and give it subtly woody notes and it came out perfect!! After several weeks of curing, my soap bar still smells exactly the same as I did when I sliced the loaf, still woody, minty, and fresh.

Smells like any other cedar EO

Personally it is too much for me but every single cedar EO I've tried from other brands were the exact same way, so I went into this expecting it to be strong. It is an amazing blender. I used a dropper to blend this with 4 parts lavender, 1 part eucalyptus, and 1 part cedarwood for a room spray and it is so earthy and it rounds out a lot of earthy/herbal blends.

Also not to mention it smells exactly like wood shavings.

Not what I was looking for...

Personally It smelled bad, but my mother liked it. I gave it to her, but wouldn't purchase again. Was looking for a more calm Cedarwood smell.

Take on scent

Was so looking forward to Cedarwood. I've been wanting to make a candle that smells like Cedar, so I purchased this right away. I think it smells just like cedarwood, however, it smells just like the exterior of the tree. I think I was looking for more of a pure cedar smell you get from cutting into the trunk of a cedar tree like in wood shops rather than the evergreen scent that this provides. Unfortunately wasn't what I was looking for, but came out nicely in the Golden Brands 464 Soy Wax.
