The concept: 

“Petrichor” is the scent of rain falling on dry soil. It’s an earthy, almost indescribable aroma that is intrinsically familiar. The word is derived from the Greek 'petra', meaning stone, and 'ichor', the golden blood of the immortals in Greek mythology. We’ve been searching for a real, true petrichor fragrance for a long time. We smelled so many different options, but it wasn’t until we got to this version that we felt we had a winner.

Evaluation notes:

Since it was so highly requested (by both our customers AND our staff!) we had a much larger group evaluation for this scent. It was a unanimous favorite. Some of the comments included:

“Smells like a dug up garden”
“Smells like rain on dirt.”
“Amazing earthy rain. Would be great for blending!”

Needless to say, we’re excited to finally make a true Petrichor available!

Steal these ideas:

Lean into the authentic, natural quality of this fragrance. It won’t be for everyone, but those who love this kind of dirty, earthy scent will come back to it again and again.

If the name Petrichor doesn’t quite work for you, we do recommend a name that strongly alludes to the scent of rain. Like:

• After the Rain
• First Rain
• Rain Storm Morning
• Rain

We chose to present this scent in our Stone Modern Ceramic Tumbler–we like how the color calls back to stormy skies and wet pavement. We kept our label simple (who would have guessed!) with the scent name as the prominent element. People who love this kind of fragrance do specifically look for “petrichor” so it’s a good idea to make sure it stands out.

The concept:

You may have heard of “forest bathing.” Forest bathing is a term that originated in Japan. The practice is simply the act of spending time in nature, particularly in woods and forests. The benefits of spending time basking in the beauty of the natural world are well-documented, and we wanted to include a fragrance that alludes to, and maybe even encourages, this practice.

Evaluation notes:

Mountain Mist is a well-balanced fragrance, and our evaluators all noted the strong hot throw. You’ll pick up both pine and aquatic notes that result in a moody, misty, haunted forest sort of vibe.

Steal these ideas:

So….who else started singing Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold when they saw this fragrance name? We know we aren’t the only ones! Particularly for those whose lines are focused on literary themes, fantasy, or general nerdiness, this might be a good way to present the fragrance. Here are some other name ideas:

The concept: 

“Beachwood” first got on our radar as a frequently searched term on our site. Lots of you were looking for this scent! We always love the marriage of woody and marine notes and this is a beautiful addition to that fragrance family. 

Evaluation notes:

Our evaluators all noted how pleasant yet complex this fragrance is. We gave it a 2 out of 3 on our strength in soy wax scale–it’s a little lighter than some other scents but still a good performer in soy wax.

Steal these ideas:

Not so into the name “Beachwood?” How about one of these alternatives:

• Sea Salt Breeze
• Driftwood
• Outer Banks

We think this scent has a pretty wide appeal, so follow your instincts with this one. It can act as a beachy scent, a marine scent, a woody scent, a fresh/clean scent…so many possibilities! It’s a good fit if you’re looking for a beachy fragrance that isn’t sweet or fruity. 

Our label inspiration is grounded in a “coastal grandma” vibe. We like the simple, elegant, yet unfussy look of this one!

The concept: 

You may have been waiting for this one–we certainly were! Golden Santal was inspired by Le Labo’s cult favorite fragrance  Santal 33. This scent is both a staff favorite and highly requested by our community, so we knew it was a concept we wanted to explore.

Evaluation notes:

We always recommend evaluating a scent in wax, soap, or personal care base (or at the least, on a blotter strip) before passing a final judgment, as the out-of-bottle aroma will always be a little different from the aroma in a finished product. Users of Golden Santal should make sure to note that this is particularly true with this fragrance–the scent is sweeter at first sniff from the bottle but the full depth of this complex scent comes through in wax. 

Steal these ideas:

If your target market includes those who are probably familiar with the Le Labo fragrance, we recommend keeping “Santal” as part of the scent name. Anyone who engages with the luxury fragrance community will surely recognize it! But if Golden Santal doesn’t quite work for you, try one of these:

• Sandalwood & Cedar
• Naughty Santal

Lean into the luxury concept with this fragrance! Make sure your fragrance description and images convey an experience of opulence–think imagery similar to boutique hotels and high-end department stores.

The concept:

This fragrance oil is inspired by smoke cleansing, a practice of clearing and cleansing spaces with herbal smoke. Smoke cleansing is not to be confused with “smudging,” which is a distinct spiritual practice held sacred by some Indigenous cultures in North America. 

Different forms of smoke cleansing have been practiced through the centuries across different cultures, for purposes of removing impurities from the air, banishing negative energy, and for health. While Sage and Cypress fragrance oil cannot claim any of these helpful properties, it does capture some of those peaceful, negativity-banishing vibes.

Evaluation notes:

When testing out Sage and Cypress, all our evaluators noted the strength of the hot throw and the relaxing effect of the sage, cypress, palo santo, and hints of smoke that make this scent so pleasing.

Steal these ideas:

You can always use any of our fragrance names as your own, but if the Sage and Cypress name doesn’t quite match your branding, here are a few other ideas:

• Sage and Smoke
• Bad Vibes? I Don’t Know Her.
• Cleanse & Calm

This is a scent that will likely appeal to people interested in spirituality and/or new age practices, so if that’s your target market we’d recommend using language that conveys those concepts in your naming, product image, and fragrance description. 

We kept our label mockup simple, clean, and modern. We really like the idea of different colorways for a single label design–you can match the colors to the scent or vibe you want to convey.

The concept:

Tobacco has been a highly requested scent for quite some time. We’ve tested out many different variations, but until now, just didn’t find anything that hit all the right notes. 

We wanted something that could be both modern and nostalgic–and Sweet Tobacco is both!

This scent was particularly important for us to get right. Our headquarters are in Durham, NC, a city with a long history in the tobacco industry. From the many old brick tobacco storehouses to the iconic Lucky Strike tower in the American Tobacco Campus, this history is very much present in Durham. The Bull City nickname even came from Genuine Durham smoking tobacco logo!

Evaluation notes:

Sweet Tobacco balances the earthiness of pipe tobacco with sweet notes of caramel and honey. It’s a great year-round offering with wide appeal.

Steal these ideas:

This fragrance is distinctly tobacco, so we suggest keeping it as part of the name or using a conceptual name that strongly alludes to tobacco, pipes, etc. If the Sweet Tobacco name doesn’t quite work with your branding, you could also try: 

• Tobacco Caramel
• Cherrywood Tobacco
• Brightleaf
• Smoking Jacket
• Pipe Tobacco

For our label design, we obviously had to go with a cigar-style label! We felt it was quite fitting when paired with our Bronze Infinity Tin and are big fans of this look.
