behind the scents:

May 2019 fragrance oil revisions

You may have noticed we’ve been on a slow-but-steady fragrance oil revision spree over the past few years.

While we continuously test and evaluate our full fragrance line to make sure we’re always supplying you with the very best products, we have a particular goal: creating high-quality fragrance oils that don’t just adhere to industry safety standards, but exceed them.

That’s why we’re committed to a fragrance oil line formulated without phthalates, and with the launch of these 8 revisions, we’re very close to achieving it.

Safety and performance are always our top priorities, but we’re also taking the opportunity to improve our fragrances in other ways. Flashpoints that allow for shipping via air, new usages approved for personal care applications, and strong performance in soy, coconut, and other natural waxes are a few of the practical improvements we’ve made. But we also didn’t forget about what makes fragrance so exciting to work with in the first place: the scent characteristics.

Fragrance is like fashion—while some things are classics year after year, the fits and stylization change. These are still the classic scents you know, but updated for modern tastes.

Mimosa and Mandarin

This fragrance oil is one of the original 25 scents we launched way back in 2004. Can you believe that?! We’ve learned a lot since then, and have gotten so much helpful feedback from you along the way. With this revision, Mimosa and Mandarin is now not only formulated without phthalates but an even stronger performer in soy wax, going from a 1 on our rating scale to a 3.

Creme Brulee

What’s the best part of creme brulee? Breaking into that caramelized sugar crust, of course! With this new version of our Creme Brulee fragrance, you can practically hear that mouthwatering “crack.” It’s yummier and much more realistic, with a sophisticated edge that elevates this simple dessert scent to the next level.

Green Tea and Lemongrass

This is another of our original 25 fragrances and has kept its place as a staff and customer favorite since. Many of the most recent customer reviews for this scent requested a phthalate-free formula, so we made it happen! The scent profile is nearly identical to the original, with a few minor tweaks that add complexity and depth.

Cranberry Apple Marmalade

Cranberry Marmalade was another original 25, and one of our most popular around the holidays for its balance of tart, sweet, and spice. Its replacement, Cranberry Apple Marmalade, doesn’t just retain this balance, it heightens it.

Vanilla Chestnut

We’ll admit it: this fragrance just might be our favorite of the launch. Positioned as a replacement for Vanilla Hazelnut, this fragrance is truly something special. Woody, warm, and deliciously toasty, Vanilla Chestnut is a true trendsetter. It’s less sweet than a typical vanilla scent, and softer than what you usually find in cedar-driven fragrances. This is one you just have to sample for yourself!

Fresh Coffee

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of a fresh cup of coffee, and we hear from candle makers time and time again that Fresh Coffee is a year-round best-seller. The new Fresh Coffee is even better. While the note profile is largely the same, this version is less bitter with more of a “downtown coffee house” character. Purists will love this scent on its own, and it’s great for creating custom latte blends. (Hint: try this with Toasted Pumpkin Spice or Pumpkin Chai for the perfect PSL fragrance.)

Gardenia Tuberose

Gardenia is a classic fragrance and one of our original 25. Makers loved the sweet, delicate character and the recognizable floral scent, but we thought it could use a modern update. The new Gardenia Tuberose has more freshness, thanks to the inclusion of green floral and lemon peel notes.

Sea Mist

Funny story: there was a time we intended to discontinue this fragrance for good and offer a slightly different concept in its place. An outpour of love for Sea Mist followed that we didn’t expect, so we listened and kept it on our roster. But we still felt we could make Sea Mist even better, so we revised it instead, working hard to retain the fresh, salty character makers loved so much.
